Week 2, Final Finishes

I've just completed Week 2 of my Summer 2015 blog challenge series (you can read more about it here) and I have five more quilt tops to share today! This week, I focused on two drawers of fabric by Moda designer Chez Moi. I started with Coquette, because I had the most of that particular collection.

Since I've also been using this challenge to try out some different quilt patterns, I decided to go with a braid design. I used this free pattern from Moda, except I omitted the borders to make the quilt a baby size. I think this was a great pattern for the collection -- I like the way the colors and designs kind of blend together even though you can still see the braid. Making the braid part was fun and addictive, but I must admit that trimming the sides and sewing the bias edges together was a little scary!

After I finished the first quilt, I took stock of what was left, and realized that I had bits and pieces of many different Chez Moi collections, including Posh, Boutique, Swanky, Hunky Dory, Sophie and Coquette. Since most of the pieces were fairly small, I decided a coins quilt was the best option to blend all of these collections together.

I ended up making TWO coins quilts, and I love how unique each one turned out just by using a different border print. I also love how well all of those fabric lines worked together in the end. I chose to omit the purple from Coquette (since it was the only line that contained it) as well as a couple of the brighter red and blue pieces I had from Boutique. I absolutely loved seeing these come together!

And the purple didn't go to waste -- I used it to make a little minky blanket for our bunny, Fifi!
I still had lots of pieces left, but two coins quilts were enough, so I decided to make the cover quilt from Allison Harris' book Growing Up Modern (Allison's blog, CluckCluckSew, is one of my favorites!). This was perfect for all the little leftover pieces from the coins quilts.

The fifth and final quilt was made using the Flowers in the Sunshine pattern by Sweet Jane. I've made this one before, but it was a good way to use up the leftover charm squares and coins pieces!

I was able to use up an entire drawer of fabric, and now my remaining Chez Moi precuts fit in a single drawer.

This week, I'll be tackling my Joel Dewberry fabrics:

Even though they look pretty organized, the three drawers are filled way past maximum capacity, so my hope is to at least make some room in each drawer. I'll post some progress on Wednesday!

Twenty-Five Quilts, Day 23

This quilt features the Juggling Summer collection by Zen Chic for Moda fabrics. When I first saw the collection online, I didn't think I would like it, but when I saw it in person at a quilt shop, it caught my eye. I purchased a charm pack and 1 1/2 yards of yardage with the intention of making a small patchwork squares quilt.
I pulled the project out on an unexpected snow day last week. As soon as I started laying out the squares, it became clear to me that I needed to go a different route. There are a lot of duplicates in the charm pack, and many of the fabrics read as solids, so I knew I needed to cut them up for better distribution, and add a neutral solid.
I cut all of the charm squares in half, added some strips of Kona Ash, and another coins quilt was born!
I always have trouble choosing a good quilting thread color when my background is light grey -- every time I try a grey thread, it always seems too dark. I ended up with an unexpected choice, a pale golden color called "Antique" by Connecting Threads. I actually used it on my last three quilts, and I think it will also be the perfect choice for my next quilt top, which also has a grey background.

I'm not sure what I'll use for the binding yet -- I don't have quite enough of the backing print leftover, but I might have a green in my stash that will work. I'm stockpiling some binding projects for a trip next week!

Twenty-Five Quilts, Day 9

Yes, another coins quilt (I told you I liked them!)

This one features fabrics leftover from a couple of Lucy's Crab Shack quilts I made. (by Sweetwater for Moda fabrics)

I used up some larger scrap pieces of Joel Dewberry's Modern Meadow collection for the backing, as well as some scrap strips from the front. I like the tropical look -- it goes well with the beachy theme of the collection!

More coins quilts to come shortly!

Twenty-Five Quilts, Day 7

I'm continuing along on my Twenty-Five Quilts in 25 Days blog challenge! To follow the journey from the beginning, start here.
I love coins quilts because they are a great way to use up scraps. I have several versions I'll be sharing this month! This one is made of an older line called Freebird by Momo for Moda Fabrics.

I still have quite a bit of Freebird in my stash, but the smaller scraps really needed to be tamed, so I decided it was time for a coins quilt.

The color palette in this collection is so fun!

I chose a chocolate brown floral for the bag, and the fun oval polka dot for the binding.

Thanks for visiting!

The Twelve Months of Quilting, 2013

This year, I decided to do a retrospective of many of the quilts I completed in 2013. I had lots of fun going through my photos, and playing with the Pic Collage app. Inspired by the song "The Twelve Days of Christmas", here is my "The Twelve Months of Quilting, 2013". Enjoy!

In the twelfth month of 2013, my true love gave to me..

Seven coins quilts...

Six Seuss quilts...

Twenty-Five Quilts, Day 1

Since I've been such a lazy blogger lately, I thought it was time to issue myself another blogging challenge. How about "25 Days of Quilts"? Each day in December (through Christmas!) I'll try to post about a recent quilt finish!

Earlier this year, I made a pink and white stars custom quilt, and ended up with a pile of small scraps. They were the perfect size for a scrappy coins quilt!

I actually pieced the strips of coins this summer, but put them aside to work on other projects. Because a lot of the assembly was done, this top was a fun project a few weeks ago when I was looking for a fast and fun finish.

The backing is from Sandi Henderson's Farmer's Market collection, which is now out of print. I had a small piece of it left in my stash, and it seemed to be the perfect choice! The pink binding was also leftover from a previous project.

I love a project that uses up leftovers, and clears the way for new fabric acquisitions!
